MBHS Scholarship Program
MBHS Alumni NY Chapter Scholarship Program
Over US$24,000 in Scholarships since 1997
The MBHS Alumni NY Chapter Scholarship Program was started in 1997 when the first annual scholarship of three hundred dollars (US$300) was awarded. This was a culmination of years of planning and putting into place the groundwork to ensure a sustainable scholarship program. The aim was to assist needy students who had academic potential but a need for financial aid.
The scholarship recipients would be eligible for an additional award each year to the fifth form level, if they met the required academic and social requirements. If the student did well and went to sixth form at Morant Bay High School their scholarships would continue. Additionally, the cost of external examinations at fifth and sixth form level would also be paid for these students. Since it’s inception in 1997 the program has grown significantly. In 2004, under the leadership of Charles Murray and our committed team the program moved to new dimensions. Some individual past students through the chapter volunteered to sponsor additional students. For the current school year 2009 – 2010, we have awarded our 20th, 21st and 22nd scholarship recipients. To date, a number of past scholarship recipients have graduated locally from the University of the West Indies. Currently, we have three past scholarship recipients attending the University of the West Indies and University of Technology in Jamaica and Fisk University in Tennessee, USA. |
We would like to thank all our sponsors, members of the scholarship selection committee and supporters who have continued to make this program a success over the years. We are very appreciative of the efforts of past students and sponsors who have made personal commitments to support individual students from our Alma Mater.
As this program continues to gain popularity and continued success within the school, so has the demand for financial help from the student’s body. This has resulted in a more sophisticated selection process for the scholarship recipient than in earlier years. Prospective scholarship students are now required to submit an application along with an essay detailing why he or she should be selected. The scholarship selection committee made up of past students has the difficult decision of selecting the awardees. During this selection process, the team develops an attachment to the students and this continues throughout the period that these students are in school. As such, we do our best to provide the mentoring and guidance as an integral and important part of these students ability to succeed. We are encouraging all past students to participate in this program and help a student realize his/her dreams. |
Together we can change the landscape of many families and with your continued help, we will succeed.
