United We Stand!
Recently, I had the occasion to reflect on the unique bond that links MBHS past students. We are truly blessed to have a history that unites far more than it could divide. My thoughts concluded that maybe because the majority of us share a common background, that of being from the most neglected and economically deprived parish, we learned from early years that it is “all for one, one for all.” That common background which also encapsulates our humble beginnings, challenging childhoods and diverse communities, was moulded and shaped into nation-builders at that fountain of education on Highbury Hill: Morant Bay High School (MBHS).
Perhaps there is no greater stage to re-live the memories and to reflect on the wonderful experiences than the MBHSAA-NY’s Annual Dinner and Dance. Yours has been the standard-bearer of what reunions are all about! The true MBHS green and white spirit is reflected in the fact that persons plan for this event well in advance and travel from all over the globe to attend. The dinner and dance is now a staple in most people’s calendar and the measure of its success is evident in the significant growth over the past decade. We do owe a lot to the advancement in technology for this growth, but certainly, confidence in the leadership of the chapter and the knowledge of its contribution to the development of our alma mater plays an even greater role.
We salute you, MBHSAA-NY for the sterling contribution you have made to the school over the years. We recognise that your 24th anniversary, in a year in which the school will celebrate 50 years of existence, means that you have been a tower of strength for almost half the life of the school. So enjoy your celebrations in true MBHS/St. Thomas spirit and stand proud in your achievements. May the green and white bond that ties us together continually reminds that “united we stand.”
See you in January 2011 at the MBHS 50th Anniversary Celebrations! Carpe Diem.
